Painting

“In theory, theory and practise are the same. In practise, they are not.” Albert Einstein.

Painting is a way to express the feeling, colours and worn patinas of environments, particularly coastal landscapes which provoke strong feelings both of wilderness and sanctuary. Ireland’s west coast, Cornwall and Shetland are strong influences, but the work is not specific to an area. Paintings start with experimentation, often layering and distressing materials & paint. I respond to how the materials transform over time, changing with each layer until the destination is determined and the piece resolved. I draw on past observations from my sketch books and memories of the atmosphere, form and patina of place to resolve the work.

Paintings are usually acrylics or mixed media, which will often include salvaged papers.
