Felt

*Merino fibres; cutwork, stitch, embedded fabrics & found materials*

Felting transforms loose fibres into a material with a resilient but soft character. This medium can be used in sympathy with the subject, or provide tension with contrast to the subject. In my work I use wool fibre to capture other materials and through a process of constructing and deconstructing both two and three dimensional works are produced.

PLACE

*Lava field – inspired by a river emerging from beneath a 10ft layer of lava rock. [25×135 cm]*

East Fjords, Iceland – one year we travelled into the East Fjords and found the remote campsite overlooking the water was gone. It was very late, so the light was going dim. There were some Icelanders mending a small church and they made room for us in the attic of the adjacent house. The crosses in the foreground acknowledges this sanctuary.

Glacier – merino fibre, part silk chiffon overlay, embedded fabric, stitch and cutwork. The piece is framed so that the lower edge ‘flows’ over a linen base. The touches of yellow reference the marker poles of the interior highlands.

*Iceland – Highlands volcanic desert. Layers of mineral ash.*

Iceland, Approaching Geysir [approx 32×158 cm – detail]. Icelandic sheep wool mixed with merino fibres and embedded fabrics. In winter the sun is very low and lights up the hillside around Geysir turning it into shades of ochre & brown topped with violet.
